Charlie turns against modern society, the machine age, The use of sound in films?
Firstly we see him frantically trying to keep up with a production line, tightening bolts. He is selected for an experiment with an automatic feeding machine, but various mishaps leads his boss to believe he has gone mad, and Charlie is sent to a mental hospital - When he gets out, he is mistaken for a communist while waving a red flag, sent to jail, foils a jailbreak, and is let out again.
We follow Charlie through many more escapades before the film is out. He stands alone as the greatest entertainer of modern times! Chaplin fought long and hard against using all synchronous dialogue in his films, but by the time he was ready to make Modern Times he was ready to experiment with this new medium. Originally intending Modern Times to be a talkie, Chaplin initially wrote dialogue for his characters and even recorded some test scenes.
But unsatisfied with the outcome, he opted to stick to what he knew best: pantomime. However, there are numerous examples of the use of synchronous sound throughout the film including sound effects, which Chaplin enjoyed creating and were made part of the overall music score.
Despite its limited use of sound, Modern Times is in many ways the last major silent film. Studio Visits. Repertory Picks. By Hillary Weston. Purchase Options. Dick Alexander Cell mate Dr. Widdecombe Billows Mr. City Lights Charles Chaplin. The Gold Rush Charles Chaplin.
